Pedestal for a heavy sculpture: which steel model for which load?

A heavy sculpture leaves no room for guesswork. A top plate that is too narrow, a centre of gravity in the wrong place, and it is the artwork — not the pedestal — that pays for the mistake. Before choosing a pedestal for a heavy sculpture, you need three figures: the real weight of the piece, its footprint, and the load the support genuinely accepts.

This article sets out the rules we apply every day with the sculptors, galleries and museums who order steel pedestals from us, and says at what point you need to move to a bespoke build.

“Heavy sculpture”: from what weight?

The word “heavy” means nothing until it is a number. One piece looks massive and weighs 12 kg because it is hollow; another fits in two hands and weighs 30 because it is solid marble.

Without scales, estimating by density gives a close enough order of magnitude:

  • Solid bronze: around 8.9 kg per litre of material
  • Steel: around 7.85 kg per litre
  • Marble, granite: around 2.7 kg per litre
  • Terracotta: around 1.9 kg per litre
  • Resin, plaster: around 1.2 kg per litre

In practice: a 60 cm lost-wax bronze, cast hollow with a 4 to 5 mm wall, usually weighs between 15 and 25 kg. A 40 cm marble bust easily exceeds 30 kg. The same silhouette in resin stays under 8 kg.

Three families emerge, and they do not call for the same answers:

  • Up to 15 kg: any properly built pedestal will do; the question is aesthetic before it is technical.
  • 15 to 50 kg: the real territory of heavy sculpture in galleries and private interiors. A welded steel pedestal becomes the sensible choice, and the top plate and stability start to decide the outcome.
  • Above 50 kg: you leave the catalogue. Internal reinforcement, a spreader plate, ballasting or floor anchoring — see the section on the bespoke pedestal.

Load rating: what a steel pedestal actually holds

Our whole range is rated for a load of up to 50 kg per pedestal. That figure is not a rounded sales argument: it corresponds to a welded steel structure and a solid top plate, tested under distributed load.

Two points matter more than the number itself.

Distributed load is not point load. A work resting flat across the whole plate and a work bearing on three points or a single rod do not apply the same stress. In the second case, add a metal plate, a board or a few millimetres of acrylic in between: the load spreads and the plate does not mark. Many of our clients add a board or a cloth anyway, to avoid direct contact between the work and the steel.

It is almost never the plate that gives way. On a correctly sized pedestal, the limit you meet in practice is not fracture but loss of stability: a piece that is too tall, too cantilevered or off-centre tips long before the steel tires. Hence the next point.

Stability: the plate and the centre of gravity come before the weight

A stable pedestal follows two simple rules.

The top plate must exceed the work’s footprint

Take the footprint of the sculpture and add 3 to 5 cm on each side. Below that, the work overhangs visually and the whole thing looks unstable even when it is not. Far above it, the pedestal starts competing with the piece. Our plates cover the useful range: 19, 22, 26, 30, 34 and 38 cm.

The centre of gravity must stay within the middle third of the plate

Set the piece down and work out where it pulls. If that vertical line falls outside the middle third of the plate — common with sculptures in movement, outstretched arms, leaning figures — you need either a wider plate, a counterweight built into the work, or a fixing. It is the most valuable check you can make before buying, and it takes ten seconds.

The right height: put the point of interest at eye level

A standing visitor’s eye sits at around 148 cm. The rule we apply is direct: pedestal height = 148 cm minus the height of the work’s point of interest (the face of a bust, the gesture of a figure, the top of an abstract form).

A bust whose face sits 48 cm above its base therefore calls for a 100 cm pedestal. A low, spreading piece calls for 90 or 95 cm. In a display case or on a table, you naturally drop to the 40 to 55 cm formats.

The nesting sets (Tertio, Quatuor, Penta, Duo) stack inside one another: they travel and store in the footprint of the largest pedestal, which is decisive for a gallery or an artist doing the art-fair circuit. Every model comes in black or white and is made in France.

That trade-off is why we make steel pedestals and nothing else: they last, their self-weight stays manageable for transport, the colour range is wide and the cost is contained for equivalent quality.

Our range includes no wood and no acrylic. Nothing stops you adding a board or a sheet on top of the steel plate if your work calls for it.

Above 50 kg: the bespoke pedestal

Past that limit, or as soon as the geometry of the work is out of the ordinary, we build to measure. The levers are well established:

  • Internal reinforcement and thicker sheet steel
  • A spreader plate for point supports or rods
  • A wider top plate beyond 38 cm when the footprint demands it
  • Ballasting at the foot for tall, cantilevered pieces
  • Floor anchoring or a through fixing for spaces open to the public

Bespoke work is developed with the artist or the owner, from the dimensions, the weight and photographs of the piece. Allow around ten days for manufacture. Ask us to study your piece.

Installing a heavy sculpture without incident

  • Check that the floor is flat first. A pedestal on a warped board or an uneven tile loses most of its stability; adjustable felt pads take up the defect and protect the surface.
  • Never move a loaded pedestal. Take the work off, move the pedestal, put the work back.
  • Above 35 kg, handle with two people. That is the threshold we recommend for pieces that are moved regularly, in the studio as much as during install.
  • Secure the contact: museum gel, felt, or a mechanical fixing in spaces open to the public and in circulation areas.
  • Plan the strike if you exhibit at fairs: nesting models reload into a vehicle without a dedicated crate.

Frequently asked questions

How much weight can a steel sculpture pedestal hold?

How wide should the top plate be for a heavy sculpture?

Is a wooden pedestal suitable for a heavy sculpture?

Under a high load and over time, wood moves: it deflects, reacts to humidity and copes badly with repeated handling. Steel remains safer at equal bulk.

How do I know whether my sculpture might tip?

Find where the centre of gravity falls once the piece is in place. If it sits outside the middle third of the plate, choose a wider plate or plan a fixing.

Are the pedestals made in France?

Yes. The whole range has been designed and manufactured in France at our industrial partner since 2015.
